The PlayStation 2's Red Screen of Death (also known as RSoD) comes up if you insert an unreadable disc or an Xbox 360/Wii/PC game to a PlayStation 2. It is accompanied by a sound similar to the start-up, but with a lower pitch and more tense noise. Also, the typically blue background changes to a dark and angered shade of red with the words "Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc." appearing.
How to Resolve[]
Simply eject the disc and it will return to the normal PS2 screen with the floating dots.
Could It Scare Others? - Scare Factor[]
Ranking: Low to Nightmare
The red screen and the dark lower-pitched music would probably unnerve most people but not for some, especially if you're expecting your game to start up and wind up this. However, the scare factor is lower to some players, or those who are used to it.
Trivia[]
- Any disc with a DVD in it or from a different region (like trying to insert a PAL [European] disc into an NTSC [American] PS2) will trigger the RSOD.
- This is similar to the Windows Blue Screen Of Death (BSoD). The only exception is that the RSOD can be resolved.
- If a Dreamcast disc is inserted, Track 2 can play, but Track 1 is a data track, so it can't.
- Any disc like a CD or DVD with a computer program on it will trigger the RSOD.
- When the RSOD is shown, the sounds that play on the beginning of the RSOD is actually the sounds made when you're in the Main Menu of the PS2. The only exception is that it's lower pitched, has additional scary sounds, and is more noisy.
- If a Xbox disc is inserted, it will instead show a scary intro, then say "This is an Xbox game disc, please put in your Xbox to start playing" in multiple languages.
- If a Xbox 360 disc from before 2010 is inserted, it will show "To play this disc, put in an Xbox 360 console" in multiple languages. Xbox 360 discs after 2010 will trigger the RSOD.
- Despite that the Red Screen Of Death is considered a variant to the startup it doesn’t always show up after the startup sometimes it shows up after the main menu or the disc loading screen disappears and also it can be caused with many ocassions.
